Noli

Noli is a small town that became an independent city state in 1797. The city was most prosperous during the time where sea trading was at its peak. One used to only be able to reach the town on a ship or by risking the very narrow and bumpy pathways.



The church San Paragorio (June-Mid Sept. Tue, Thurs, Sat, Sun 10am – 12pm, 5pm – 7pm), built in the romanesque era, is unusual and is an important historical building as lies below normal ground level of our day.



In the heart of the old town you can find the church San Pietro. It was originally built in the 13th century but was later renovated in baroque style in the 16th century.



The 40 meter high towers, built out of brick, help make the skyline of the city unique. There used to be over 72 towers. Every family that catered to a war galley from Genoa was allowed to erect a tower.



For a truly spectacular view of Noli, one can hike up Monte Ursino to the Castello of the Margrave Del Carretto. On a clear day you can even see all the way to Genoa.



For those looking for less climbing, every year on the second Sunday in September the Regata dei Rioni takes place. This is a rowing regatta in which representatives of all four districts of Noli dress up in historical costumes and race each other for pride.
